Henna | Original Yemenite Jewish Wedding Oil Painting | Livnat Bashari Juli
Medium: Oil on Canvas | Size: 50x70 cm (approx. 19.7x27.5 inches)
A vibrant, sketch-like painting capturing the essence of the traditional Yemenite Henna ceremony.
At the heart of the piece, a mother places henna on her son’s palm, while the bride, adorned in traditional Yemenite attire, watches with a joyful smile.
A Celebration of Heritage:The Henna is an authentic, colorful, and joyous rite of passage for young couples before their wedding.
It is a bridge to ancient traditions and a preservation of the rich culture brought to Israel by its pioneers.
The ceremony is filled with blessings, prayers, and well-wishes for a happy life together.
Between the Figurative and the Abstract:
I chose a figurative approach for the central figures to capture the raw emotion and excitement in their expressions.
As the gaze moves outward, the painting becomes increasingly abstract, inviting viewers to weave in their own personal memories.
The dominant red hues, central to the ceremony itself, combined with sketch-like lines and dynamic movement, evoke a sense of continuous celebration.
Artistic Context: "Henna" is part of a moving series of oil paintings that blend realism with abstraction. This series documents the legacy of my grandparents, Rabbi Zachariah and Naomi Bashari, Zionist pioneers whose lives were guided by the values of love, family, and faith.
